Saturdays are great days for Sewing!

By Guild Admin, January 18, 2011 5:29 pm

Our Sewing Saturday schedule for January through June has been fine tuned and finalized.  The complete calendar is available on the events page our website.  As our Sewing Saturday chair says,

If you really don’t want to do another full size quilt, any of the Workshops will teach you a technique that can be used to make what ever you want, from a pot holder to a king size quilt and everything in between.

There’s something for everyone!   And we haven’t even mentioned the potluck lunch….mmmm!

September Meeting Education

By Guild Admin, October 19, 2010 11:11 am

At our September meeting, Mary L shared a great suggestion for building your own Big Board, a large pressing surface placed over an ironing board.  The very next day, I received a newsletter from thequiltshow.com with a description of the very same thing!   I have quoted the text from the newsletter on our Tips page along with a photo Mary provided her input in italics.

3rd Place: Star Spin by Linda Salonen

We saw this quilt pattern in St. Jacobs, ON. and loved it. It is called “Star Spin”. Thank goodness for Nel DePorto or I would not have completed it as I couldn’t get the star points to meet without her help. The awesome quilting was done by Sharon Timson. We love the final results!

Wow! What a week end!!

By Guild Admin, April 26, 2010 10:15 am

Summer weather this past week end was in complete contrast to the winter weather we experienced two years ago for our biannual quilt show.  Attendance this year was fantastic.  Vendors tempted visitors with a huge selection of delectable fabrics, patterns and tools.  The quilted items on display amazed and inspired all who viewed them.  Our tea room provided a feast for the eyes and the palette.  Ongoing workshops and demos were informative and entertaining.  Saturday’s Banquet was a great event with miniature quilt auction, delicious dinner, award  presentations and wonderful special guest, fiber artist Lynn Landry-Rody of Thread in Time, Thunder Bay.   Photos of the quilts and events will be posted soon.  For now, here’s the winner of the Thimble Treasures Quilt Show Viewers Choice:   “A Tisket, A Tasket, Log Cabin Basket” made by Nancy Eichel.Viewers-choice-2010-1Sandra Armstrong (show co-chair), Nancy Eichel and Anna May Krassilowski (show co-chair)

Quilt Show Season

By Guild Admin, March 23, 2010 10:42 am

Laura Peterson of Bigfork, Montana kindly allowed us use of a portion of the photo of her quilt called  The Quilt Show for our website header.  It is an incredible piece of workmanship (workwomanship?).  She has posted additional pictures and detailed information about this project here.

Don’t forget our very own quilt show is April 24 and 25, 2010.  The countdown clock is ticking away (see sidebar).  Information can be found in the Quilt Show drop down list above or in the printable poster below.  Don’t miss it!

Placemat Purse Class

By Guild Admin, March 12, 2010 11:37 am

Placemat Purse Sewing Saturday took place on February 27, 2010 with Mary LaRocque as the facilitator.  Mary gave us an easy lesson to follow using everyday placemats which were transformed with buttons, trims and doo-dads into clutches, totes and purses.  The only limits to our creations was our own imaginations. Before we sat down and sewed, we were treated to some examples of  Mary’s purses.  Embellishments were added first and then the actual assembly took place.  Many thanks to all those who willingly shared buttons, braid, appliques and ideas.  The creative juices were really flowing by mid-morning and by late afternoon, you can see from the pictures, what we produced for our boutique at the quilt show.  Many thanks to Mary for her expertise and generosity in sharing her ideas. And, to all those marvellous cooks, well, the  food was terrific again!

Party Time

By Guild Admin, February 5, 2010 9:00 pm

exps6086_DM1002C2Our February general meeting is a special one!  Quilters from all over the region are invited for a great evening of home made desserts and a giant Show and Tell.  This year it will take place Tuesday, February 23rd at 6:30 at the Dryden Go-Getters Senior Centre, St Charles St, Dryden.  There is no charge for this event.  Attendees are asked to bring a nametag and some of their quilting to ’show and tell’.  There will be a noodle exchange.  If you would like to participate, roll up (like a jelly roll) five different fabrics cut in 2 ½”strips by width of fabric.  You can exchange as many noodles as you bring to the meeting.  Bring a friend and join in the fun.
